Combining Liposuction with Other Cosmetic Treatments

Patients often ask to combine liposuction with other cosmetic treatments to complete much of their sculpting at one surgery.  For certain body areas, such as the abdomen, upper arms, and breasts (especially male), the amount of fat removed is usually high. The skin here may or may not retract after the surgery. The age of the patient, skin quality, body’s medical condition/history, and lifestyle (smoking, drinking, etc.) influence the skin elasticity. Sagging skin and contour irregularity are often lipo related issues. Stretch marks may become more evident post operation. Therefore, 6 months after lipo suction, the doctor may suggest a plastic surgery to reduce such effects.

Combining liposuction with other plastic surgery in one session is not regarded safe. However, many patients want to combine their liposuction with complementary procedures, such as :

  • Tummy Tuck Surgery or Abdominoplasty: A cosmetic surgical treatment for firming up the abdomen, the process removes excess loose skin and fat, down the navel. This helps firm up the abdominal wall. The ideal candidates for tummy tuck include women with loose skin, especially after pregnancy, or those looking at major weight reduction. An experienced cosmetic surgeon should perform this technique.
  • Butt Augmentation or Butt Implants: It helps enhance the buttocks volume (size and shape) by surgically inserting silicon, or fat from the candidate’s body (fat transfer).
  • Calf Augmentation or Calf Implant: Those unable to build up their calf muscles even after rigorous exercise can benefit from this treatment.
  • Arm and/or Thigh Lift: This surgical procedure removes the excess skin and fat that distort the arms’ shape. Similarly, a thigh lift enhances the thigh muscles.

Interestingly, in certain situations, combining liposuction with other cosmetic treatments does help attain a desirable outcome. Such rare matches include the subsequent conditions:

  • Liposuction with a Tummy Tuck: At times after liposuction, there is a surplus of loose skin, which usually has a decreased chance to adapt to the body’s new appearance. In such cases, abdominoplasty helps prevent an adverse outcome of the liposuction surgery. However, doctors advice against combining abdominal liposuction procedure and the immediate tummy tuck surgery, due to the high risks of complications and deaths. Laws in Florida prohibit practitioners from combining liposuction surgery of the upper abdomen and immediate abdominoplasty.
  • Liposuction Procedure and Hip, Thigh, or Buttock Lift: This too, rids one of excess sagging skin resulting from lipo. This lift is quite effective.
  •  Liposuction and Wrinkle Removal: Combined with tumescent liposuction, the wrinkle removal procedure aids in slimming down and smoothing the face and neck areas.
  • Lifts: People pursue face, breast, and lower body lifts also. Combining liposuction with other parallel cosmetic treatments like these, yield better effects.

In all of these situations the safety of the patient comes first.  Many surgeons will insist on splitting the procedures in order to protect the patient and the final outcome.
