Liposuction for Men

Man's Arm

To eliminate excessive and stubborn (diet/exercise resistant) fat from different body parts by surgical means is called liposuction. When performed on men, the procedure is broadly termed as male liposuction.

Why Liposuction Surgery?

The desire to obtain or maintain an athletic and toned look (especially from ages 19 to 45 years of age), often drives men towards the process. The effects will remain, if followed with a healthy diet and regular workouts.

Levels of Difficulty

Compared to female liposuction, that for men is more complex to perform for the following reasons:

Tough Fat: A man’s powerful build is aided by ‘hard to disintegrate’ adipose tissue (fat) deposits in the body. Males have more fibrous fat than females. To remove it surgeons usually use  micro-cannulae with very small outer diameters (measuring as small as 2.8mm).

  • Body regions:      Men desire liposuction mainly for chest, flanks (love handles or loin) and      abdomen – the body areas which have dense, fibrous, fatty tissues.
  • Quantity:      Due to their large body size, the amount of fatty deposits in men is high,      which compels laborious liposuction in men.

Body Areas for Liposculpture in Men

Chest, abdomen, thighs, face (chin and jowls), and flanks are the main body areas for which men request surgery. Among these, chest, abdomen and flanks are the areas most frequently treated. Here are some details on them:

  • Chest:

All over the world a large number of men suffer from male breast enlargement. Gynecomastia and pseudo-gynecomastia are two conditions resulting in the size increase.

  •  Gynecomastia occurs due to the presence of excess   fibrous glandular breast tissues in men. Serious in nature, it results  from alcoholism, hormonal imbalance, drugs, tumor(s) or is an indicator of  some other serious illness.
  •   Pseudo-gynecomastia is the presence of  excess adipose (fat) tissues in the chest. It is usually the reason for  enlarging breasts in men and is the one most effectively treated by lipo.  Apart from being an indicator of many serious health problems, breast  enlargement causes a significant loss of self-esteem among men. Wearing skin fit clothing also becomes a problem. Therefore, the chest area dominates the frequency of liposuction for men. Earlier, scalpel surgery was performed, but that would leave scars. New tumescent procedures performed with local  anesthesia have now altered the scene for good.

  • Abdomen:  The lower abdomen of males is often hostage to stubborn fat deposits. The resulting structure is called potbelly, beer belly, or spare tire. Apart from lifestyle reasons, such as an excess alcohol (especially beer) consumption and sedentary habits, heredity is also often responsible for abdominal fat.

  • Flanks:  Stubborn fat at or below the waist, (above the hipbones to be specific) results in love handles or flanks. Flanks are largely rooted in the body’s genetic disposition. They are easily tackled with local anesthesia covered liposuction, which yields stable results. Performing flank lipo with general anesthesia is usually not preferred, as a breathing tube has to be inserted into the patient’s trachea in that case. Rolling the patient, even to the sides, can then be risky, as the breathing tube may become dislocated, resulting in hypoxia. The patient, therefore, cannot change position, and access to the fatty areas from the back becomes difficult.

Male Liposuction Cost

Because of the high difficulty level, liposuction for men is generally more expensive than that for women. Body size, regions of treatment, and total quantity of fat to be removed are some other price factors. Furthermore, the surgeon’s expertise and the facility’s reputation drive the prices.

The cost of liposuction may also vary with the geographical locations- with different rates in different US states. Here is a list projecting the range of average prices for male surgery:

  • Breast – $3,000 to $6,500.
  • Lower abdomen – $2,000 to $2,500
  • Neck and facial areas – $2,500 to $4,600
  • Flanks liposuction – $2,500 to $5,000
  • Thigh liposuction – $2,200 to $4,500

The figures mentioned above are just an approximate reflection of the prevailing rates. You must consult the relevant experts in your area for an exact idea about the applicable liposuction prices.
